Some Kroger Deals

There are four coupon inserts this weekend and that has inspired me to get back in the game a little. Here is a little matchup that I got from Katy Couponers if any of you want to get in on it as well! Hope ya'll are doing well!

This week, Kroger has Crest toothpaste on sale for $1. Well, apparantly there is a catalina deal on Crest that earns you $2 oynso when you buy $6 or more worth of Crest. This catalina apparantly is working on the regular shelf price of the Crest($2.24). So, this can be as large as a $2 money maker for each 3 you purchase if you have $1 off coupons. My inserts had the .75 insert 6-5 and 7-3 PG, so $1.25 money maker for each 3(you must purchase in separate transactions).

If you are heading there anyway, some of the other items I have read as being free or cheap are as follows:

Oral B toothbrush $1 - $2/2 7-3 PG = FREE

Ivory soap $1 - .50 insert 7-3 PG = $0.50

Beggin Strips bogo - bogo insert 5-8 SS (ymmv if cashier will allow bogo on bogo, but if so and you have enough coupons, get 8 and you will get a $5 oynso for purchasing $30 in Purina products)

Frenchs mustard $1 - .30 6-19 SS = $0.70

Reach Floss $0.95 - lots of $1 inserts and printables = FREE

How I planted my Hopi style veggie garden:

OK, so I planted my garden this weekend after much consideration. I love to have a garden, and have had one for the last 5 years and 3 different houses. I love having fresh veggies in my backyard and involving my kids in this fun process. There are, however, two things that I DON'T like about gardens and those would be: weeding and watering! So, I have a system that minimizes both of those that worked pretty well for me last year.
Now, I feel like I should give a disclaimer that I really have no idea what I am doing. I got all of my processes from my brother Adam who is a TRUE gardener, he's got the gift!! Last year, he helped me plant my garden so I just replicated what we did last year. Anyway, let's get started!

1. These are the supplies that you will need to buy:
- 50 ft. sprinkler/soaker Hose ($9.95)
- Tarp or weedproof paper. Last year I just used garbage bags and nails, but this year I got fancy when I found this stuff at Walmart. It is a heavy paper/plastic substance that seems pretty cool. This is the barrier that blocks the weeds from your garden.  ($14.95)
- steaks for your tarp or paper ($1.97)
- seeds/plants ($9.20)
- shovel ($1)
- scissors (not pictured)
- soil (not pictured) Organic if possible ($2.99 a bag, I got two bags)

2. If you are very thorough, dig up all the grass and till up the ground, mix in your soil in the area you plan to put your garden. If you are not, pull most of the grass.
Lay down your tarp/paper, and steak the edges in the ground

3. Cut out holes approximately 1-2 feet apart
Till up the exposed ground and mix in some of your soil.

4. Pile up soil over all of your holes, use a little water if the dirt is falling down.

5. Plant your goodies according to package directions. I planted tomatoes, parsley, and basil from plant (I need to get two more, they didn't have the variety I wanted) But, I planted cucumber, squash, and lettuce from seed. In my experience those do VERY well from seed, literally better than plant, I think because they are very established in the soil. The lettuce will start to sprout in a week or so.
NOW, this is the COOLEST thing about a Hopi style garden. You can have a smaller garden because each hill has three different plants on it. The three plants can be planted together because they each pull different nutrients from the ground so you don't need to space them as much. In a standard garden, you would have rows of each plant spaced pretty far apart. In a Hopi garden, you just have hills with each plant represented. The traditional plants they used were one corn on top, beans on the side to grow up the corn, and squash on the other side to go around the hill. You can swap out similar plants, like I swap out cucumber for squash.

The last step is to wind your soaker/sprinkler hose around your garden so it can water your plants each morning and all you have to do is remember to turn it on and off. Goodluck and Happy Gardening!!

Houston Kroger ending doubling/tripling of coupons April 13th!

My friend Brandi shared some VERY sad news with me via my facebook page. I saw it on my phone when I was in the car with my husband and I literally cried out, "NOOOOOO!!!" lol, He looked over at me, pretty concerned (I think he thought someone just died or something) and I was a little embarassed to tell him why! =-) Anyway, a blogger up a Katy, TX has a relationship with Kroger and they sent her this letter, straight from the source, here is the sad news, get your tissues!!

"Good Afternoon, Stephanie,

It’s come to our attention that you may be receiving questions about our new coupon policy and are uncertain how to address these inquiries. As we prepare to notify households by mail of the discontinuation of our double/triple program, a key component is educating our front-end associates about the change to equip them to handle customer questions. Our front-end associates and Customer Service Managers (CSMs) were recently informed of the change. We are aware that this information has begun to circulate and as a result, some shoppers may be turning to you for answers and clarification about our policy. Additionally, erroneous information has been posted on other blog sites and savings forums.

We acknowledge that these are issues and questions you must address with your readers now and we welcome you to do so. We’re in the process of finalizing the new coupon policy and have decided to share it with you prior to April 5, in the meantime, the information listed below should prove helpful in responding to any questions about the matter.

Ø   As we openly shared with you on Monday at the VIBE, we absorb the cost of doubling and tripling coupons - not the manufacturers - and it’s a sizeable expense each month. Our data shows that only 7% of households take advantage of doubling and tripling. Although more costly to us a company, more than 19% of households take advantage of the fuel rewards program.
Ø  With the growing popularity of digital coupons, mobile apps and manufacturers producing coupons valued at more than 50 cents, we feel it’s an ideal time to test out a new money-saving program and discontinue double/triple.  There’s a possibility we may re-introduce double/triple by hosting special shopping events intermittently.

Ø  We will still continue to accept coupons at face value. Part of the new policy states there is a limit of one electronic or paper manufacturer coupon per item. The opportunity to stack is no longer available. A digital coupon and manufacturer paper coupon may not be combined on the purchase of a single item. More than 130 digital coupons are available daily at www.kroger.com.

Ø  If you have loaded an electronic coupon to your Kroger Plus card, then the digital coupon will apply before the manufacturer paper coupon. A digital coupon cannot be removed from a transaction once redeemed.

Ø  In addition to accepting coupons at face value, Kroger still offers a number of ways to save. We saved Texas shoppers more than $25 million in 2010 through different programs including the Pick 6 wine discount, generic drug pricing ($4/30-day supply and $10/90-day supply), everyday 10% senior discount for shoppers who are 59 and older, and fuel rewards.

Ø  Through the fuel rewards program, shoppers save 3 cents per gallon everyday at Kroger Fuel Centers. There are 67 Kroger Fuel Centers in Greater Houston. Customers can save 10 cents per gallon at Kroger Fuel Centers and more than 500 participating Shell locations in the area when they earn 100 fuel rewards points.

Ø  Rewards points can be earned in the following ways:
o    Spend $100 on groceries, earn 100 points. ($1 = 1 point)
o    Spend $50 on gift cards and we double the points. (1 $50 gift card = 100 points)
o    Fill or refill 2 prescriptions at a Kroger Pharmacy. (1 prescription = 50 pts)

A more thorough outline of our coupon policy is to come; however, we want to equip you with the key messages so that you can address your readers’ concerns now. Please feel free to encourage your readers to use their coupons before the double/triple program expires on Wednesday, April 13,

If I can provide any additional information at this time, please let me know.

As always, thank you."

Buy these six products at Wal-Mart (with coupons of course!!) and get PAID $8.16!!

Wal-Mart's new corprate coupon policy states that if the value of the coupon is greater than the item purchased, the overage may be given as change or applied towards the other items in the purchase. Be sure to print their policy HERE and bring it with you if you have any problems!!
So, I complied a list of items that come in LOWER than the available coupons. I purchase two papers per weekend and you can print two coupons per computer, so if you bought two of each of these six items, totaling 12 items, you would not only get them for free, but you would have $8.16 to go towards other items!!

Use the $3/1 coupon  HERE
= +$0.38

Purex Complete 3-in-1 Laundry Sheets (2 loads – travel size) $0.98
Use the $3/1 coupon found in the 2/20 RP

McCormick Taco Seasoning packets $0.52Use the $1/1 coupon found in the 3/13 RP
= + $0.48

Wal-Mart's new coupn policy = MAKING money at the store!!

So, unless you live under a rock, you probably know by now that Wal-Mart now has a corprate coupon policy!! WOO HOO!!! To be honest, I rarely coupon shop at Wal-Mart because they are so random in their policy. It LITERALLY was different each time I went there and it seemed that they had a bad attitude towards couponers in general. Now you can print their corporate coupon policy HERE and take it in with you if you have any problems with them not meeting the advertised standard! I will be working on a matchup today, so stay tuned for some great money makers!! =-)

How to Vacation on a Budget!

We just got back from a much needed vacation to Arizona. It was an amazing trip, but I'd be lying if I said that I didn't bust my booty beforehand to make sure we got the most bang for our buck!
I thought it would be great to share some of my strategies with my readers, so here goes!
We flew into Phoenix, got a rental car, drove to Tucson to see my brother for the weekend, drove back to Phoenix and stayed with my mom for a few days, left the kids, and then my husband and I went to Sedona and the Grand Canyon alone. We drove back to Phoenix, got the kiddos and flew out from Phoenix. Here are my top five tips for saving money when traveling, then I will detail the trip, what it would have cost if I did not shop around and get creative, and then what I paid.

Top Five Tips:

1. Check flight prices on Southwest every Tuesday when the new weekly rates come out, they will change drastically from week to week.

2. use rentalcars.com to get a rental car. Also, start shopping about a month before your trip. I had been searching nonstop and the rates were around $400 a week everywhere, and then, the week before we left, I found rentalcars.com and the price was $188! I don't know if it was just rentalcars.com or the proximity of the trip but it made me very happy!!

3. Use Restaurant.com to eat out!! Restaurant.com sells $25 gift certificates for $10 everyday, however, they often have codes that you can use to get 80% off, making the $25 gift certificates just $2! You can search whatever town you will be in to find restaurants and buy them ahead.

4. Use Priceline.com for your hotel! This was my first time using priceline and I could not be happier!! You name your price and what star hotel you want, and then priceline searches hotels that will accept your offer. I named a price of $100 a night for the best star available, which was four. It was a little scary because you don't know where you are staying until after you pay for the hotel! We ended up staying at a Resort, and they upgraded us to the best available room with a fireplace, terrace, view, and hottub which goes for $250 a night usually!

5. Make your own tours! There are so many tours available, but if you have a rental car and some creative know how, you can do it yourself! The tour from our hotel to the Grand Canyon was $135 a person. We ended up driving there ourselves, and it cost $25 a car to get into the national park, once you get in, they have a pretty elaborate bus system that takes you to different view points that you can ride for free!

List Price:
1. Flight $218 each way x 4 people x 2 ways = $1744
2. Rental Car = $400
3. 14 meals for four people = $490
4. Resort $250 x 2 nights = $500
5. Grand Canyon Tours = $270

TOTAL = $3404.00

Actually Paid:
1. Flight $89 each way x 4 people x 2 ways = $712
2. Rental Car = $188
3. 14 meals for four people using Restaurant.com certs = $168
4. Resort with Priceline $100 x 2 nights = $200
5. Grand Canyon gas and ticket into park with free bus tours = $45

TOTAL PAID = $1313.00

SAVED $2091.00!!

Hope this helped one person! Happy Traveling!!
